27 Minute Clarity Talk: Attention Practice, A Powerful New Method of Clearing
Welcome Home!
I want to tell you about Attention Practice. If you’re a regular reader of this blog, then you know I’ve been talking about something I was calling The Attention Narrative. The more that I worked with that, the more it morphed from being a means of investigation to be used and discarded into a tool for daily practice. You can even do snippets of this for just a few seconds a day throughout the day. I’ve had clients who’ve had immediate shifts using this.
Attention practice is, first and foremost, a method of clearing within post-awakening. Clearing, or working with Awakeness, is where the rubber meets the road in spirituality, and it’s the very thing most people neglect. If you don’t like to practice, try this anyway. I enjoy this clearing method as well as get a lot out of it. I have a lot of clients who would second that. You can use this in meditation, or as meditation, or as a supplement to your sitting practice. Let me know how it goes..

Hi Fred,
I just applied your attention practice as my morning meditation. Very effective, direct and streamlined. Best part is its totally portable – pocket clarity. Perpetuating meditation into the active day has been a standing challenge. This feels like the key. We’ll see today.
Thank you, Fred.

Hey, Marty! Thank you so much for the feedback! It’s important for me to know how well a video has carried its message, and it’s important to know what’s really working in the field.
In joy,

This stuff is so obvious, isn’t it!? 🙂 Great “exercise” but even better when this “perception” becomes habitual (and it does). Living on-going meditation type of thing. Really enjoyed it. Thanks!

Yes, it’s indicative of the subject matter, I think–a beautiful clearing.

I’d been doing the eyes closed & eyes opened as separate “techniques” and now you’ve made it so obvious that they are one thing (no-thing), the unconditioned space contains all objects of the conditioned space.

This is great, David! Thanks so much for letting me know. There’s just ONE thing going on. 🙂

Really could sense the shift and, as always, enjoyed the seductive pointing out. But let us understand, Fred, that only your unit could sum up all of human conditioning as hand puppets or barking dogs. Brilliant!

Hey Fred!
This is feedback for your new Ultra Clarifying Technique which for the most part did not have any big effects on me with the following exceptions. Just to reiterate, Awakeness comes and goes on cats paws and that’s what happened when I tried this technique.
The part that got me the most was when you asked us to see if there was any difference between the open awareness in our vision and the subjective awareness looking into the open awareness or some such statement. I felt a stop there, I guess mind stop. The rest of the exercise did not produce any shifts but what I noticed later was that I started dropping spilling things again which usually follows an Awakeness’ embodiment visit and some the next morning. I marked it on my calendar as a brief visit.
So, Awakeness can come and go without my realizing it till the dropping, spilling things starts again and then I realize there had been a Presence. If she (It, she female body) is present for awhile I’ll feel an up shift in mood and delight. Since last Sunday, I have been recovering from a bad cold plus the incidents that happened at work so I know Awakeness hadn’t been present because of the lack of spills, drops etc.
I’m wondering and worrying about Sunday but will try to let go of as much as possible. I may have to have the full realization for Awakness’ stability to occur, but I don’t know.
Much love,
Arlenez
PS If we have time ask me about the general statistics about female/male differences in spatial recognition. Men are far superior in that function. Also see Peter Francis Dziuban’s book,”Simply Notice” whose work has a similar feel to your work.

Hello, Arlene! I think Sunday will be helpful to you.
From your note: “Awakeness can come and go…”
Is that true? Where do you think it comes from, and where do you think it goes?
From your note: ” I know Awakeness hadn’t been present…”
Is that true? Who is it that knows Awakeness hadn’t been present? Where do you think Awakeness slipped off to?
All love,
Fred

The idea of recognizing the whole may be very atractive to the ego: “I’ll understand the whole thing and relate myself to it!” It sounds great but it is a trap, an egotrap, and when the ego is caught in it,
his last atempt to escape are the words “I’ve got it”. When wholeness is recognising itself, those words are just an insignificant vibration in the vastness. The last words of the ego. But if we believe in them, the vastness goes away leaving us only with the idea that we are someone who finally understand something.
The recognition can’t be stored, so the only thing that counts is if there is recognition in this
moment and that “Attention Practice” as you call it, is very powerful in keeping it
alive! Thank you!
Your site has been very useful, here in Brazil the only teacher that I know next to me is my cat and his aproach is very direct, no words.
Thank you very much!

Thank you for this video Fred!!! So lovely to get to experience you again. 🙂 I haven’t been following you as closely recently, so I’m not sure if you’ve done other such videos, but I’ve found it incredibly helpful! I can see myself watching it periodically, as a reminder and practice. Nice to not have to pay for sessions to get your guidance.
And I will definitely be sharing it with my peeps. Somehow I seem to be slowly moving towards being a parenting coach for the nondual crowd. I got a new client yesterday who found me by googling ‘advaita and parenting!’ Not sure how I came up, but it’s so awesome and exciting!
Love you and I look forward to hopefully getting to chat with you soon.
