Q & A “Do you still have preferences?”
I got an email from a reader yesterday, and before I could answer it, I somehow misfiled it, and now I can’t find it. It was a longish email, and I had only skimmed it to see that the primary question was, “Do you have preferences?” It’s a good question, so I thought I’d answer it here–twofold.
Answer 1: No, I as Consciousness have no preferences whatsoever. I accept all things exactly as they are. I “rain on both the just and the unjust,” as Vivekananda said. This is True Nature.
Answer 2: Yes, I as Fredness still have preferences, but I am not married to them. I’m not even dating them seriously. They come and they go, one right after the other. Sometimes my preferences are met, but often they are not–at first glance. Upon investigation, however, I am almost always able to want what I got. This is the secret to happiness: be surrendered to this arising, regardless of its content.
I live in a state of what I call “pre-surrender”, which is another word for keeping an open heart. I know I will surrender to whatever comes my way. Furthermore, I’m open to doing that at the very first possibility, becauseI’m not keen on suffering.
Sometimes I suffer anyway, because some event will pull me out of sanity until it doesn’t. But not very often and never for very long. This is human nature. I am not either Divine or human; I am both. So are you. I hope this helps.
All love,
Fredness

Thanks, Fred. I sometimes think of awareness as having a preference for exactly what arises. When my preference diverges from what arises, then I’ve slipped out of reality. I think of it as God’s world versus my world. The stronger my divergent preference, the further I am from God’s world, and, consequently, the greater my suffering. So my practice is to align myself with mySelf.
I love the concept of “pre-acceptance.” All arisings have already been accepted, otherwise they couldn’t arise.
Love,
Kathleen
