A direct transmission outside of scriptures, apart from tradition Without dependence upon words or letters. A direct pointing to mind. Seeing into one’s nature and awakening.
There is a famous koan called Joshu’s Dog that goes like this, “A monk asked Joshu, ‘does a dog have Buddha nature?’ Joshu replied ‘mu’!” The monk was enlightened by this answer. Mu means nothing, literally.
