Clarity Talk: The Problem with Pointers & The Sense of Being Meditation
I wonder if you’ve noticed what I’ve noticed. Pointers appear to be skillful tools, but how many people actually wake up from them? I’ve used them a lot in the past, but today I primarily use them with clients to hep them objectively confirm that awakening has, in fact, really happened. I have them simply compare their current (Consciously Awake) experience with half a dozen well known, but rarely understood pointers.
This is where pointers really shine, as hard evidence to our minds and hearts that we have, in fact, been moved to a new plane, where Truth has become obvious. Yet as practical tools of awakening, they sound better than they are, and of course they have the added benefit of making the teacher sound wise and mysterious! I don’t mean to dismiss pointers altogether. They can be helpful, but I don’t see them as generally being particularly freeing.
What is freeing is direct exposure to Truth. A fine way to do that is through The Sense of Being Meditation, which this video explains. It is immediately, if subtly, effective in apparently “transporting us” from the experience of duality to the doorstep of Wholeness, as well as having a progressive effect that will take us off the doorstep and through the Gateless Gate. Nisargadatta was a big believer in this simple meditation, although he had a different name for it. In application, I think our methods would be strikingly similar.
If you’re moved to do so, I welcome you to check it out.
