Ego is like a cataract, an occlusion that impairs vision. The awakening event/process is the gradual removal of that occlusion so that the Light of Truth can shine through it clearly and wash the dream with Itself.

(how funny, the “I Am” is like a cataract too (as in waterfall – the River, Flow!) (it seems like English comes up with an awful lot of synchronicity like that)
A new term occurred to me – Alien I Syndrome. I’ve been fascinated with Alien Hand Syndrome, and all the more so now with inquiry of my True nature. So in wondering about it again I realized the obvious – what if the “alien” experience applied to the eye, both simplistically like we were a victim of a roving eye, and metaphorically like the dream experience is – that life is Done to “i” and that “I” am not the Source of it. (“Let thy eye be single”!)
I think Alien Hand Syndrome people are a little more accurate in their experience. Us regular people feel like we, as our conscious decision, execute the hand movement, when that “we” is as much as effect as the hand itself. And we think Alien Hand Syndrome is weird!
And where the weirdness hits the pavement is my “i” trying to grasp this understanding for itself. That grasping itself is my hand (my “i” !) grasping at air! (trying to keep the shadow puppets moving yet wanting the light that makes them!)
