As many of you know, there will be a full solar eclipse on August 21, and Columbia, SC is right in the middle of its path. The city is expected to host close to half a million visitors for the day. I have my certified glasses, and I’m sending a pair with Betsy when she goes to work that day.
Here’s a link to an essay, “Total Eclipse,” in The Atlantic by Annie Dillard, the author of Pilgrim at Tinker’s Creek, which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1975. That was my second year as a bookseller, and it marked me. She is a naturalist and a mystic. Frankly, I don’t know how you could be a naturalist without being a mystic, or be a mystic without a deep love for the natural world.
Someone sent me the link last night and I took the time to read it. It’s beautiful and powerful. Now I offer you the same gift my friend (a mystical naturalist) offered to me.
