Will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I’m 64?

Thanks to all of you everywhere who’ve sent or directly given me unbirthday wishes on this fine, pre-hurricane day, a day on which I turned a whopping 64. Betsy and I had dinner with her mother (Betty, who’s 90!) and her father (Chet, who’s 97!) and two of her brothers. I was in high-entertainer mode, and we all ate and laughed until we were nearly ill. Life is good.

The first time I heard the Beatles sing “When I’m 64,” I couldn’t imagine I’d ever live long enough to turn 64. I wasn’t even sure I wanted to! But now that the unit is here, I find this experience to be very rich. Betsy told her family tonight, “We never have a bad day.” And we don’t. It is such a hoot to live consciously, to experience a world where everything counts, yet nothing matters.

Belated good wishes for your birthday! “When I’m 64” – great song! Impossible when we’re young to project forward and imagine what being old(er) will be like, just as it’s impossible to know what tomorrow holds. I notice here that the unit needs stronger glasses, has more aches and pains and is, perhaps, not so sharp mentally. But I also notice that what looks out through these eyes hasn’t changed at all! Ever new, ever fresh, self-shining awareness!
